I have had a love affair with Hamm's Beer signs since I was a little boy. I can vividly remember staring at the glistening, rippling water of these classic signs as they hung in the supper clubs and restaurants that we'd go to on Friday nights. They just don't make classic breweriana like this any more. Flashy Neon seems to have replaced scene-o-ramas and motorized signs.
I own several vintage Hamm's signs and my absolute favorite hangs in our retail store in downtown Whitefish, Montana. So i was quite dismayed when one day I was told that she was no longer working.
Knowing that parts for these classics are hard to come by, I was concerned this might be the end. I dismantled the sign and realized the motor that rotates the scene had fried out. I removed it and noted the manufacturer's product number (the motor was date stamped July 1969...) In less than a half an hour I was able to find an identical used motor from 1965 online. You gotta love the internet...
A week later it arrived and I carefully re-installed the 40 year old new motor and gently put the remaining parts back in place. I took a deep breath and plugged it in... good as new!
